What is hotel SEO?

Hotel SEO in plain English

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of earning more visibility in search results without paying for each click. Hotel SEO applies that to hotels: helping guests find your hotel when they search for somewhere to stay, and making it easy for them to book direct when they do.

For most hotels, that means Google. And on Google, a hotel competes in more places than an ordinary business does.

Where hotels appear on Google

A search such as "hotels in Leeds city centre" can show a hotel in three different places:

  • The organic results: the familiar blue links. For hotel searches these are dominated by OTAs (Booking.com, Expedia), metasearch sites (Tripadvisor, Trivago), chains and travel guides. A hotel's own website has to earn its place among them.
  • The hotel pack: a map with three hotels, their prices and ratings, shown on the main results page. It works much like Google's local "map pack" for other businesses.
  • Google Hotels: the full list of hotels behind "More hotels", with filters, prices, deals and a page for each hotel listing every site selling its rooms.

Each is ranked differently, so hotel SEO means working on all three.

What affects hotel rankings

In the organic results

The same things that matter for any website:

  • Relevant pages for the searches guests make: your location, your kind of stay (boutique, spa, family, dog-friendly), nearby attractions and events.
  • Technical health: a fast, mobile-friendly site that search engines can crawl and understand, with hotel structured data.
  • Authority: links and mentions from local sites, tourism boards, press and travel guides.

In the hotel pack and Google Hotels

These draw heavily on your Google Business Profile and on what Google knows about your hotel:

  • Relevance: your category, amenities, description and photos match what the guest searched for.
  • Distance: how close you are to the place in the search, or to the guest.
  • Prominence: your rating, the number and recency of reviews, and how well known the hotel is across the web.
  • Price and availability: Google Hotels shows rates for the dates searched, and a hotel with no rates connected has less to show.

How to improve your hotel's SEO

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile: the right category, every amenity, accurate details and plenty of good photos. Keep it up to date.
  2. Connect your rates to Google through free booking links, via your booking engine or channel manager, so your official site appears on your Google page alongside the OTAs.
  3. Build up reviews: ask happy guests to review you on Google, and reply to reviews, good and bad.
  4. Write pages for the searches you want: your area, your kind of stay, the reasons people visit. Make each one genuinely useful.
  5. Fix the technical basics: speed, mobile usability, crawlable pages and hotel structured data.
  6. Earn local links and mentions from tourism boards, event venues, local press and partners.
  7. Keep rates competitive on Google: guests choose from the prices shown, so an OTA undercutting you takes the click. See What is rate parity?.

How to measure hotel SEO

Rankings for a hotel move with the dates searched, the guest's location and the competition, so the useful measure is visibility across a set of searches over time, not one position on one day. Track:

  • Visibility in Google Hotels and the hotel pack for the searches that matter in your location, against your competitors.
  • Organic rankings for your website, and who holds the positions you don't: OTAs, metasearch or other hotels.
  • Your rate on Google against the market, and how often OTAs undercut it.
  • Direct bookings and revenue from organic search and free booking links, in your analytics and booking engine.

Hotelier Visibility tracks the first three every week, for every tracked hotel and location.

Frequently asked questions

Is hotel SEO different from ordinary SEO?

The foundations are the same, but hotels compete in more places. As well as the organic results, a hotel has to win in the hotel pack and Google Hotels, where its Google Business Profile, reviews and live rates matter as much as its website.

How long does hotel SEO take to work?

Changes to your Google Business Profile, photos and connected rates can show within days or weeks. Organic rankings for competitive searches usually take months, because they depend on content and authority built over time.

Do I need SEO if I use OTAs?

Yes. OTAs bring bookings, but at a commission. SEO is how you win guests directly, and how your official site competes with the OTAs on your own Google page.

Free booking links let a hotel's own website (and OTAs) appear with a price on the hotel's Google page without paying per click. You set them up through a connectivity partner, usually your booking engine or channel manager.

Does AI search change hotel SEO?

AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode increasingly recommend hotels, drawing on the same signals search engines use: reviews, amenities, location, prices and what the web says about you. The fundamentals of hotel SEO are also how you get recommended by AI.
